Demons fine Oliver for drink-driving
Dec 7, 2016 - 6:35 AM Melbourne have opted not to suspend rising star Clayton Oliver after he was caught drink-driving during the AFL pre-season.The 19-year-old, who was on his P-plates, informed the Demons last month he had failed a roadside breath test while on annual leave.
Melbourne football boss Josh Mahoney on Wednesday said the club had fined Oliver an undisclosed amount and would force him to undertake road safety education.
But Mahoney said the Demons had opted not to suspend Oliver because he had already lost his licence and been fined by the police.
"Clayton is embarrassed by his actions and understands that he has let himself and others down," Mahoney told the AFL website.
"He also understands how fortunate he was that no one was injured, nor was there any property damaged."
Oliver, the No.4 draft pick in 2015, played 13 games this season and earned a Rising Star nomination for his eye-catching debut in round one.
Port Adelaide this week slapped defender Jarman Impey with a one-game AFL suspension and a $5000 fine after he crashed his car into four parked vehicles after a weekend pool party.
Impey, 21, has been charged by police with driving without due care, fail to exchange particulars and failing to report the collision and will appear in court at a later date.
