Barlow ready to use experience at Suns

Jan 24, 2017 - 6:00 PM Cast aside from Fremantle because the club wanted to a go in a younger direction, Michael Barlow is ready to put his experience to work as an AFL leader at the Gold Coast.

The 28-year-old was delisted by the Dockers at the end of last year's horror 4-18 season, as the club aimed to reshape their roster.

However his age has been his best friend since arriving at the Suns, highlighted by his selection in the club's seven-man leadership group on Tuesday.

"I think when I came over and met with Rocket (coach Rodney Eade) and (football manager) Marcus Ashcroft initially and was making the decision as to what my future would hold, there was probably a niche spot there," Barlow said.

"Having had seven years in the system, being a little bit older and the core group here, I naturally felt that I had a really big role to play here."

Barlow's dreams for the Suns now extend well beyond his playing career.

He believes the club is building towards something, but is under no illusions as to how long it might take to reach success.

"I want to sit back on the couch in 10 years having a beer and watching the successful Suns era," Barlow said.

"I'd like to be able to think I've had a bit to do with that."

In his more immediate future is the challenge of building a new midfield following the losses of Dion Prestia and Jaeger O'Meara.

In their places are Barlow and fellow recruits Pearce Hanley and Jarryd Lyons, which Barlow labels as the most exciting aspect of the pre-season.

"I think we brought in guys with versatility," Barlow said.

"Jarryd Lyons can play midfield or he can play forward. Pearce Hanley can play halfback or wing.

"Gary (Ablett) could then go forward a bit more and maybe 12 or 14 blokes running through the midfield rather than relying on too few."
