Papley on Swans' long-term AFL injury list
Feb 3, 2017 - 5:40 AM Sydney forward Tom Papley will definitely miss the start of the AFL season after needing more surgery. The Swans put Papley on their long-term injury list after Thursday's knee arthroscopy.
There was already speculation about when Papley might return after he required an operation in December to fix bilateral compartment syndrome.
Going onto the long-term injury list means the earliest Papley can return is in round two of the regular season.
"While it's disappointing for Tom to have an interrupted pre-season, we expect him to recover quickly from this latest surgery and return to playing from as early as round two," said Swans football manager Tom Harley.
"Part of the consideration to operate certainly included where Tom is at with regard to his recovery from compartment syndrome.
"We are very confident that by addressing his knee now with minor arthroscopic surgery, he will have the best chance to make an impact when he returns."
Papley made a big impact last year in his debut season - he played 20 games, including the grand final loss to the Western Bulldogs.
The 20-year-old impressed with 29 goals and he was a bargain recruit through the 2015 rookie draft.
