Bulldogs not only handball bad boys
Mar 22, 2017 - 6:47 AM Luke Beveridge has admitted a few handpasses in the 2016 AFL grand final from his Western Bulldogs players may not have been legal. But he says a promised handballing crackdown from umpires this season needs to be applied across the board and not target his fast-paced midfielders.
No AFL side used or handballed the ball more than the Bulldogs in their improbable premiership year.
The fast movement by hand was one of the keys to their success and on season's eve Beveridge agreed not every pass met the letter of the law last season.
"We will put our hand up and say a couple of balls were thrown in the grand final that should have been paid as throws," Beveridge told Fox Sports on Wednesday.
"We may have a got away with a couple."
Beveridge said that doesn't mean the Bulldogs should be targeted in 2017 as part of the umpires' focus on flick passing.
"That wasn't a consistent thing," Beveridge said of the dodgy action.
"I worry if it's just us (in the spotlight).
"Incorrect or correct disposal needs to be judged on what the umpire sees, not a preconceived idea that someone throws it, because we don't and we don't endeavour to do so.
"If we do we believe we should be pulled up on it. As long as there is a consistent regulation of that we will be happy."
The Bulldogs begin their premiership defence against Collingwood on Friday night at the MCG.
