Martin nursing fractured cheekbone in AFL
Apr 3, 2017 - 8:21 AM Richmond will sweat on the result of Dustin Martin's fitness test as he recovers from a fractured cheekbone ahead of the AFL clash with West Coast. The Tigers have several injury concerns ahead of Saturday's match at the MCG against the also unbeaten Eagles.
Onballer Shaun Edwards (hip) and ruck-forward Ben Griffiths (concussion) definitely will not play.
And rookie-listed player Mabior Chol, a potential replacement for Griffiths, was also concussed last week in the VFL and must prove his fitness.
Martin was sporting a shiner after Thursday night's win over Collingwood, when he kicked two crucial goals late in the game and again was among Richmond's best players.
Scans have confirmed the star midfielder has a small fracture and the Tigers are hopeful he will play against West Coast.
"He copped a whack in the side of his cheekbone and we got a scan and it's come back with a small crack," Tigers performance manager Peter Burge told the club website.
"He did play three quarters of the game with it and did well. So we'll assess him during the week.
"I would be hopeful that he'd be out there on the weekend, but that'll be a medical call on Dustin."
Edwards hurt his hip late against Collingwood and Burge has ruled him out for at least a couple of weeks.
"It's come back that he's actually done a little bit of damage. So he's going to miss a little bit of time ... a couple of weeks at this stage," Burge said.
Griffiths hit the ground heavily in a marking contest on Thursday night and did not return to the game.
His concussion record meant the Tigers quickly ruled him out for next Saturday.
Veteran Ivan Maric or his cousin Ivan Soldo, who is on the Richmond rookie list, could take Griffiths' place and Chol could be another option.
