Swans facing worst AFL start for 24 years
Apr 10, 2017 - 3:40 AM Sydney are one loss away from facing their worst start to an AFL season since the darkest days of their time in the Harbour City. The Swans are 0-3 and haven't lost their first four games of the season for 24 years, adding further incentive to win against West Coast on Thursday.
But no matter how bad this season gets, it surely won't plumb the depths of their wretched 1993 campaign.
The Swans were coming of 15 straight losses the previous year.
They started 1993 with 11 more defeats before finally snapping the streak of losses at 26, with the only win they had in a 1-19 season.
The 2017 squad is so youthful that 10 of the players who took the field against Collingwood last Friday weren't even born the last time the club went 0-4.
The competition looked very different back then.
WA, SA, NSW and Queensland each had one just team, Brisbane were called the Bears, Fitzroy were still around and Footscray had yet to become the Western Bulldogs.
Sydney, who are eight points behind local rivals GWS Giants who they meet in round five, are facing a six-day turnaround from the loss to Collingwood.
After going goalless against the Pies, Lance Franklin needs five goals to become just the 12th man to kick 800 or more majors,
However, Domain Stadium hasn't been a particularly prolific hunting ground for Franklin, who has kicked 32 goals from 15 games at the venue.
At least he's familiar with the ground, unlike seven of the Swans side from last Friday who haven't played an AFL game there yet.
Swans' coach John Longmire could however have some more experienced players back from injury.
Kurt Tippett could return from an ankle injury which kept him out of last Friday's game.
Two other forward options, Gary Rohan and Tom Papley are both coming off the long-term injury list this week.
