Dockers can keep getting better: Lyon
Apr 20, 2017 - 3:44 AM Fremantle's season is back on track with two strong wins but coach Ross Lyon feels the only way for that to continue is for greater improvement.Following losses to start the season, much of Fremantle's turnaround to beat the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne has come from the midfield.
With Aaron Sandilands in dominant form in ruck and and Nat Fyfe, David Mundy, Lachie Neale, Connor Blakely and Lachie Weller at his feet performing well, the Dockers' season is suddenly rejuvenated.
While Lyon has been happy with the response of his team in the past two weeks, he still expects more from his midfield - including captain Fyfe on Saturday night against North Melbourne at Domain Stadium.
"Nathan's effort at times has been supreme but he's far from playing his best footy and David Mundy has spent a fair bit of time forward," Lyon told reporters on Thursday.
"Connor Blakely has been in there and it has really been our wings Brad Hill and (Ed) Langdon, and Harley Balic has been in there. We haven't relied on our experienced players but at critical times you know you can put your best six in there.
"I think there's plenty of upside in our midfield, I've seen our midfield play a hell of a lot of better than they are at the moment. And more consistent over four quarters."
Lyon said he was weighing up bringing in an extra tall to help tackle North Melbourne's height - that could mean that either a second genuine ruckman in Jon Griffin or pinch-hitter Matt Taberner, who has kicked seven goals in the past two weeks in the WAFL.
"It's something we've got to look at because they are quite tall in the front half," Lyon said.
"Jonny Griffin's been really solid and there's Taberner who could come in and help out with that.
"They are the considerations and at the end of the day you live and die on those calls. You are king or a dunce whether you do it or you don't."
