Martin on track for Tigers-Demons clash
Apr 20, 2017 - 6:14 AM Richmond are confident AFL superstar midfielder Dustin Martin will overcome groin soreness to take on Melbourne on Monday night.Martin was held to a season-low 16 possessions and didn't hit the scoreboard in the Tigers' win over Brisbane last weekend and went in for scans on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old's stellar form has been a key factor in the Tigers' 4-0 start to the season and skipper Trent Cotchin backed him feature prominently against the Demons.
"Dusty's (probably) the most durable player at our footy club ... I think most teams would have him on one leg anyway," Cotchin told reporters on Thursday.
"I think he'll come up fine.
"He'll train on the weekend and it's one of those ones that you wait and see how it plays out.
"He did a bit of running (on Thursday), I don't think it's anything too significant ... it's just a time thing."
Martin's issue is one of few injury concerns for Richmond, who will have key forward Ben Griffiths available after missing two games with a concussion.
Monday night's clash will be the third meeting between the clubs on the night before Anzac Day, with the Demons looking for their third win in what both clubs hope will become a regular fixture for the foreseeable future.
Unbeaten Richmond go in to the clash in third spot, while eighth-placed Melbourne have lost their past two matches to be 2-2.
Cotchin warned that the Tigers are capable of playing even better football than the eye-catching brand they've already put on show in an impressive opening month.
"There were patches in the game at the weekend where we were probably disappointing," he said.
"We pride ourselves on defence and we let ourselves down at times.
"We've got to carry on our momentum."
The unblemished opening to the season is a far cry from the faltering starts to recent campaigns.
"I think our fans have the right to be excited - it's our best start in a little while," Cotchin said.
"It's a tough game as a player and as a supporter who has been starved of success for a long period of time and we owe it to them to enjoy it."
