Lions rue yet another lost AFL opportunity
Apr 22, 2017 - 9:01 AM Brisbane AFL coach Chris Fagan was left to rue yet another one that managed to get away after his brave Lions were run down on Saturday by the Western Bulldogs.Fagan's side led by 38 points in the second quarter and still clung to a lead with just over nine minutes left in the hard-fought contest at Etihad Stadium.
But the Bulldogs, perhaps inspired by Bob Murphy's 300-game milestone, sailed home with the last seven goals to claim the 17.20 (122) to 14.6 (90) win.
The much-improved Lions were in front or at least right in the contest late in losses to Essendon, St Kilda and the Bulldogs.
Nonetheless, Brisbane are a 1-4 team, five rounds into Fagan's tenure.
"That's the reality so you've just got to accept it," Fagan said.
"We've been competitive in all of our games (except) maybe Richmond ... but we're still a 1-4 team - we've got work to do.
"(But) I think this game will be a magnificent learning experience for us when we dissect the tape and look at the things that we did well and then the things that we can get better at.
"It was probably the most-valuable game that we've played this year and I've got no doubt it will help us somewhere down the track to get where we want to get to.
"We're not there yet but, if we persist with that sort of approach and attitude, we'll get there."
The Dogs kicked four goals to none in a pivotal third quarter.
The Lions' cause wasn't helped when Murphy was gifted a goal when a Brisbane trainer incurred a 50m penalty when he ran through the mark.
"It's disappointing, isn't it, in a (close) game like that? It turned a tough shot into a gimme goal," he said.
"I'm sure the trainer didn't mean to do it.
"We've just got to move on ... these things happen."
