Saints take confidence from Giants' scalp
May 9, 2017 - 4:19 AM St Kilda midfielder Sebastian Ross says his AFL team are far from the finished product despite knocking of flag favourites Greater Western Sydney last round. The Saints moved to eighth after finally taking a scalp of a top side for the first time this season with a 23-point victory.
Ross said the team had taken confidence from the win after a pre-game chat about their desire to beat a team that was above it on the AFL ladder.
"We knew coming into this game that they were second on the ladder and we talked about needing a scalp," Ross said on Tuesday.
"Taking it right up to GWS with our pressure game which was on show, it was good for the younger guys to see that working."
The 24-year-old said the Saints couldn't afford to ease off this Saturday when they face in-form Carlton, who have won their past two matches.
Ross said a review of the GWS game showed there were improvements to be made.
"There was still plenty of stuff to work on - a lot of areas in our game that we didn't get quite right," Ross said.
"That's a pretty positive result, getting that type of result against a top-two side but still having plenty of things to work on."
Ross has been one of the Saints' best this season, averaging 28.6 disposals per game but said being in his sixth year he needed to deliver
"I've been pretty slow so it's taken me a while," he said.
"In 2016 I had to perform as I'd been hanging around without doing too much so I soaked up that pressure and took it on."
Fellow midfielder Koby Stevens will sit out the Blues match after he accepted a one-game ban for rough conduct for his sling tackle on Giant Nathan Wilson.
Stevens was actually awarded a free kick, despite the tackle leaving Wilson dazed.
Ross said it was an unusual situation but he understood the AFL's stance on the tackle.
"I've never seen one where the guy gets the free kick and ends up getting suspended for it," Ross said.
"I can understand what the AFL's trying to do with taking those sort of tackles out of the game, because it can be a really dangerous look."
