Pendlebury puts impending birth first
May 10, 2017 - 7:11 AM Collingwood skipper Scott Pendlebury says he's prepared to walk off midway through Saturday's AFL clash with GWS if his wife goes into labour.Pendlebury's wife Alex is due to give birth this weekend in Melbourne, setting up a potential clash with the struggling Magpies' twilight game against the Giants at Spotless Stadium.
Pendlebury plans to board a flight to Sydney with his teammates on Friday, but is determined to fly straight back home if needed.
"I want to play," the 29-year-old told the Jock and Journo podcast.
"But if Alex rang me when I'm in Sydney and said 'we're on here', I'd fly back.
"If I have to miss the game, I'll miss the game.
"Ideally, it works out that I get to play and Alex gives birth either later this week or early next week.
"Or we could be talking about this again before the Hawthorn game (on May 20)."
The most-awkward scenario would be if news came through during Saturday's match that the birth was imminent.
"I'd like to leave halftime but that would be the worst-case scenario because it would really be leaving the boys in the lurch," said Pendlebury.
"The other really awkward thing about that is I would be on the flight home not being able to follow the game."
Pendlebury has raised the issue with coach Nathan Buckley.
"I'll travel like normal and we'll see what happens," he said.
