May stalls on new Gold Coast AFL contract
May 23, 2017 - 3:25 AM Gold Coast co-captain Steven May says he will wait for the AFL's new club salary cap to be finalised before committing his future to the Suns. The cap is expected to lift from $10.4 million to $12.45m per club.
"Anyone coming out of contract has a lot to weigh up ... I wouldn't say I've been hesitant (to re-sign with the Suns) but waiting on the CBA has been the plan of action for the last 18 months," May said.
The key defender's contract with the Suns ends this year, attracting attention from Melbourne clubs about a possible return to Victoria.
"I had good few years there at school but it is pretty cold down there ... A Darwin boy doesn't mind the hot weather up here on the Gold Coast," May said.
The 25 year-old was made co-captain at the start of the season and says it's given him tunnel vision on personal performance.
"With my new role as captain, I haven't spoken to my manager much this season he's just letting me focus on my football," May said.
"I know it would be nice to lock away a deal earlier but I just feel like I have other priorities in front of me, like my performance.
"I didn't have a great start to the year so I've just been focusing on my performances to be the best player and leader I can be."
May has been a consistent for the Gold Coast averaging 25 disposals and 13 kicks in the six games he's played.
He is planning to start contract talks with the Suns in the next three-to-four weeks.
