Trio of stars set to return for AFL Giants
May 28, 2017 - 6:15 PM Greater Western Sydney are in line to receive a triple boost for Saturday's clash with Essendon at Spotless Stadium as key players Steve Johnson, Tom Scully, and Rory Lobb eye an AFL return. The Giants have defied a horror injury toll to move to equal top of the ladder with an impressive 8-2 record.
GWS were missing 10 of their best 22 in Sunday's eight-point win over West Coast in Perth, with stars such as Scully, Lobb, Johnson, Ryan Griffen, Stephen Coniglio, and Brett Deledio all injured.
Scully was a late scratching against the Eagles with a knee injury, but coach Leon Cameron expects the former Demon to return against the Bombers.
And he could be joined in the side by Johnson (knee) and Lobb (groin) if everything goes to plan.
GWS have developed a knack for winning close games this season.
They beat the Bulldogs by two points in round six, and they've also recorded single-digit wins against Collingwood (three points), Richmond (three) and West Coast (eight) over the past three weeks.
Cameron praised the growing maturity of his group, rating the win over West Coast as one of the club's best victories.
But he said his team couldn't afford to get complacent.
"There's no rest in the competition, because if you take your eye off the ball, you just get beaten the next week," Cameron said.
"We've got a huge challenge to recover from this (game in Perth).
"It took a fair bit out of the guys, and we need to reload and go again on Saturday."
Small forward Toby Greene was the hero against West Coast with two late goals, while ruckman Shane Mumford (50 hit-outs), Josh Kelly (29 disposals, one goal), Dylan Shiel (26 disposals, two goals), and Callan Ward (33 possessions) were also influential.
