Eagles gun Shuey signs long-term AFL deal
Jun 21, 2017 - 7:43 AM West Coast have locked away star on-baller Luke Shuey until the end of 2022, effectively ensuring he will finish his career with the Eagles. The Eagles' vice-captain and reigning best-and-fairest winner is set to benefit from the AFL's lucrative pay deal after signing a four-year contract extension.
An elite ball-user with the ability to burst away from stoppages, Shuey has become one of the competition's most-damaging midfielders in recent years.
The 27-year-old had been due to become a restricted free agent at the end of 2018 and would have attracted strong interest from clubs in his native Victoria.
His decision to stay with West Coast increases the likelihood he will eventually take over from Shannon Hurn as skipper.
"To have someone of Luke's standing and character effectively commit to the club for the remainder of his career is a wonderful outcome for all parties," Eagles football boss Craig Vozzo said on Wednesday.
"The long-term commitment we are making to Luke is an indication of the club's regard for him as a person, a player and a leader.
"We are delighted that he will be a part of our football club for at least the next five years, as we see him as an integral part of the things we would like to achieve in that time."
Wingman Andrew Gaff, key defender Jeremy McGovern and ruckman Scott Lycett are all due to become restricted free agents at the end of next season.
Veteran Matt Priddis earlier this month signed a one-year contract extension, but fellow Brownlow medallist Sam Mitchell was yet to decide whether to play on next year or step into an assistant coaching role.
