Kelly could be back for Giants in AFL
Jun 27, 2017 - 8:45 AM Greater Western Sydney midfield star Josh Kelly is on track to return from injury for Saturday night's massive AFL clash with fellow AFL high flyer Geelong.Kelly was forced out of last week's game against Brisbane after injuring his hip at training during the bye the previous weekend.
He is expected to face the Cats at Spotless Stadium unless he suffers a setback at training on Wednesday.
Small forward Devon Smith could also be available after being sidelined for five matches following following knee surgery ahead of round nine.
He had been expected to be out for up to 12 weeks with a torn meniscus but will be tested this week.
Regaining Kelly and Smith would help shorten a Giants' injury list that has invariably had multiple occupants since even before the season started.
Among the first was former Fremantle player player Matt de Boer, who has played the last four games after having his Giants debut delayed by a hamstring injury back in February.
The Giants rehab room has been a crowded place ever since, though he didn't have much company at the time he got injured.
"When I was going through I was probably the only person in there," de Boer told AAP.
"Since then its ramped up which has been unfortunate, but it's one of those things that each club goes through.
'It's given the opportunity to lots of players to step up.
"We're really building a system at the Giants where it's next man in and you've got to play your role and execute on that and we can get the job done, which we've been able to do."
With a number of established players still to return over the coming weeks, de Boer knows he faces a battle to keep his spot.
"We know we've got good boys coming back from injury very shortly, so competition for spots is going to be really high, which we know is great for on-field performance," de Boer said.
'I'm not comfortable at all, I'll always be trying to improve and better myself."
