Blues lose but Jones' comeback continues
Jul 1, 2017 - 9:52 AM Liam Jones wrote a new chapter in his stunning AFL comeback story on Saturday with an impressive display in Carlton's 12-point loss to Adelaide. The forward-turned-defender got the better of Taylor Walker, keeping the Crows skipper to just one goal and taking several crucial intercept marks at the MCG.
The 26-year-old finished with 19 possessions and nine marks in his fourth AFL appearance as a defender this season to consolidate his place in the Blues' back half after his career looked all but over.
"He's been really consistent for a good month now, so we're rapt for him," coach Brendon Bolton said.
"He's really strong in the air, took some good intercept marks and had some good spoils - that's a positive for us.
"He's got really good power and he's strong in the contest so that always helps ... that's a start point.
"But I've mentioned a couple of times now his (good) mindset to try and learn (the role) and work really strongly with (assistant coaches) Dale Amos and Josh Fraser.
"With all of those things combined, I'm not so surprised."
After a shaky start, Carlton's pressure blunted the Crows' potent attack and they deservedly hit the front when Dale Thomas goaled in the final term.
They were left to rue some costly errors as Adelaide steadied, but Bolton felt it was another step in the right direction.
"In spite of the loss we feel like we're hard to play against as a footy club," the coach said.
"We didn't give up the fight today - we played right to the line
"We didn't execute in some key moments in the last quarter, but I think there is an element of pride against a quality opposition that we were right in the game."
