Longmire downplays Sheedy's praise
Jul 20, 2017 - 5:31 PM Never mind 27 years, John Longmire is lucky if he has looked ahead to next week.A day after Kevin Sheedy backed Longmire to match his near three-decade AFL coaching record at Essendon, the Sydney boss himself tempered expectations about his future.
"I can't see myself beyond this week to be honest," Longmire said.
"It's such a challenging role that you don't look too far ahead at all."
That focused, in-the-moment approach may well be what's got Sheedy and other observers convinced Longmire has what it takes to add another 20 years to his seven-season tenure and become one of the competition's generational coaches.
A premiership and two other grand finals since taking over in 2011 is impressive in itself.
But it's the manner in which the 46-year-old has transformed a 0-6 start into a 9-7 record this campaign that has really turned heads.
And while Longmire is yet to properly ponder what he will be up to at the age of 66, he is confident the Swans' stable set-up is ideal should he ever resolve to go the distance.
"I'm fortunate enough to be at a club with a fantastic board, executive, staff and playing group," he said.
"You need all those things going for you to get through from week to week and then, hopefully, from year to year.
"You've only got to look at Alastair Clarkson who (coaches) his 300th game this week to realise how strong an off-field set-up has to be to last a long time in football."
