Boyd hopes for AFL recall as end looms
Aug 8, 2017 - 5:32 PM Matthew Boyd's ongoing Achilles injury means the Western Bulldogs great will remain sidelined for Friday night's big AFL game against GWS.Boyd announced his retirement on Tuesday and has no regrets about his decision to keep playing this season.
He has only managed nine senior games, the most recent in round 16.
Coach Luke Beveridge confirmed that Boyd will be rested this weekend and there are no indications when the veteran defender might return.
"He'll freshen up and then post the weekend, who knows?," Beveridge said.
Boyd is determined to play again before his AFL career ends, but time is running out.
The Bulldogs have three home and away games left and the reigning premiers are far from certainties to make the finals.
They are seventh, one win ahead of four teams, and three of those rivals have better percentages.
"I'm excited about what the next seven weeks hold and how I can continue to contribute," Boyd said.
"Whether it's called a farewell game or not, I'd love to get myself back into the AFL side."
Beveridge said Jake Stringer (hamstring) is set to return in Friday night's Etihad Stadium clash, but a call is yet to be made on Jason Johannisen (back).
"JJ, as the week rolls on, we'll find out a little bit more," Beveridge said.
"Like on the weekend, we won't take any risks with him.
"There's every chance he might be okay to play Friday night."
Captain Bob Murphy was a late addition to the team last weekend in Johannisen's place, after originally being named as a travelling emergency for the Brisbane match.
"He didn't pull up too well after the Essendon game (the week before) - he seems to have come through this game feeling better," Beveridge said of Murphy.
"So there's every chance he'll probably be right for Friday night."
