Eskimos edge RedBlacks in defensive battle

Aug 16, 2014 - 3:46 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Grant Shaw's 27-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining lifted the Edmonton Eskimos to a 10-8 win in a defensive battle against the Ottawa RedBlacks on Friday.

Edmonton's winning drive started with a fortunate turnover in crunch time. Ottawa's Henry Burris connected with Matt Carter for a 36-yard pass play down inside the Edmonton 10-yard line. Carter, however, was stripped and the fumble was recovered by Deon Lacey with under four minutes left.

Mike Reilly, who finished with 271 yards on 26-of-35 passing and tossed an interception, immediately found Adarius Bowman on a pair of plays to get the Eskimos near midfield.

Reilly continued to drive Edmonton down the field, connecting with Bowman and Kendial Lawrence on successive pass plays to get deeper into RedBlacks territory. After a pair of short runs by Lawrence, Shaw drilled his attempt to put the visitors up two and ultimately send Ottawa to its fourth straight loss.

Burris converted 18-of-28 passes for 255 yards and Carter finished with five receptions for game-high 97 yards in the setback.

In a game where no touchdowns were scored, Ottawa's stout defense recovered two fumbles and recorded an interception. However, its fourth-quarter turnover proved to be costly.

The RedBlacks took a 4-0 lead after one quarter of play courtesy of a single and successful 17-yard field goal from Brett Maher. Shaw's 52-yard punt early in the second resulted in a single for the Eskimos, then Burris found Wallace Miles for 55 yards on the ensuing possession that resulted in a 20-yard field goal from Maher.

Shaw booted a 39-yard field goal later in the period to cut the deficit to three, but a late single by Ottawa made it an 8-4 game at the half.

Edmonton's defense stood tall in the second half and Shaw made it a one-point game with a 28-yard try late in the third.
