Cahoon, Alouettes rout Roughriders to earn playoff berth

Oct 9, 2006 - 9:48 PM MONTREAL (Ticker) -- Ben Cahoon and the Montreal Alouettes continued an impressive streak.

Cahoon had eight catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns as the Alouettes clinched their 11th consecutive postseason berth with a 35-8 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Snapping a three-game losing streak here, Montreal (9-6) collected 381 total yards en route to becoming the first team from the Eastern Division to secure a spot in the postseason.

Meanwhile, the Roughriders (7-8) absorbed their second straight road loss and third defeat in their last four games, guaranteeing the B.C. Lions the top spot in the West Division.

The rout also secured the first win for Jim Popp, the Alouettes general manager, who filled in after Don Matthews resigned last Wednesday due to stress.

Catching both TDs in the first half as Montreal stormed out to a 21-1 lead at the half, Cahoon finished the contest with 654 career receptions to pass Tommy Joe Coffey for 10th place on the all-time list.

Anthony Calvillo completed 25-of-35 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns and former NFL running back Robert Edwards added a one-yard TD run for the Alouettes.

Kerry Joseph threw for 177 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Saskatchewan, which was held to single digits in points for the first time in eight games.

Montreal, which improved to 19-2 against Saskatchewan since 1996, will face the Roughriders on the road Friday.
