Ottawa black and blue after falling to Stampeders

Aug 24, 2014 - 11:14 PM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Calgary Stampeders scored 21 points in a little over four minutes in the fourth quarter, en route to a convincing 32-7 win against the Ottawa RedBlacks at TD Place.

Calgary (7-1) quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, who has now won 10 of his first 11 CFL starts dating back to last season, converted 16-of-29 passing for 266 yards in the victory. The game also saw the return of running back Jon Cornish who ran for 74 yards on 16 carries. Joe West accounted for four receptions for 129 yards on the day as well.

The RedBlacks (1-7), losers of five in a row, struggled on offense the entire afternoon as quarterback Henry Burris connected on 12-of-23 for a mere 113 yards, was picked off once and sacked three times as he aimed to work his way up the CFL's all-time passing list.

The Ottawa defense struck first in the meeting as Jonathan Williams intercepted a Mitchell pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes into the first quarter, but from there the game belonged to the visitors.

Calgary responded late in the period when backup quarterback Drew Tate ran around the left side and into the end zone from seven yards out, knotting the score at 7-7.

In a rather uneventful second quarter, the only scoring came courtesy of a 51- yard single by Calgary kicker Rene Paredes, giving the visitors an 8-7 edge at the break.

Burris was credited with a mere 39 passing yards, the RedBlacks 55 yards of offense, through the first 30 minutes of action.

The Stamps put together a solid drive in the second half, moving the ball from their own 10-yard line to inside the 10 of Ottawa, but on third-and- inches Tate lost mishandled the snap in the pile and the RedBlacks recovered with just over eight minutes remaining in the period.

Following an interception of Burris near midfield, Calgary had yet another drive stall, but this time Paredes responded with a successful 32-yard field goal at the 11:27 mark.

On the final play of the third quarter, Burris hit Dobson Collins on a slant for 15 yards to midfield, sending the quarterback into third place on the all- time CFL passing list with 53,266 yards. The Temple product trails only Anthony Calvillo (79,816 yards) and Damon Allen (72,381) in CFL history.

Calgary began to assert itself in the fourth quarter, scoring majors on a 20- yard run by Sederrick Cunningham and a punt return of 68 yards by Cunningham as well less than two minutes later to make the score 25-7.

With the game out of reach, Burris was pulled in favor of Thomas DeMarco in the final minutes. DeMarco ended up turning the ball over on downs and that subsequently led to a 15-yard TD run by Hugh Charles at the 2:10 mark. Charles finished the meeting with 29 yards on four carries.

DeMarco, who proceeded to misfire on several passes, was subjected to a low hit to his left leg with just over a minute remaining in regulation and was subsequently carted off. Third-string quarterback Danny O'Brien came on in relief and was immediately sacked by Charleston Hughes on his very first CFL snap.
