Sep 2, 2015 - 4:58 AM Durban has been confirmed as host of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The South African city was awarded the hosting rights after a vote at the Commonwealth Games Federation's (CGF) general assembly in Auckland on Wednesday.
It was the only candidate, after 1978 host Edmonton withdrew earlier this year.
Durban will be the first city in Africa to stage the Games and will follow the Gold Coast, which is hosting the 2018 event.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 18, the birthday of late former president Nelson Mandela.
Before the vote, Durban bid representatives gave a final briefing to the assembly, which brings together delegates from the CGF's 71 member nations and territories.
