Goodall medals at boxing world champs

Sep 4, 2017 - 3:15 AM Brisbane super heavyweight Joe Goodall will start favourite for a Commonwealth Games boxing gold medal after securing the country's first world championship medal in 26 years.

A silver medal winner in Glasgow nearly four years ago, Goodall will arrive home from the AIBA world amateur boxing championships in Hamburg this week with a bronze to add to his collection.

It is just the fourth medal, all bronze, Australia have won at the titles since they began in 1974.

Not even new WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn, a 2012 Olympic Games quarter finalist, could podium at a world championship before he turned professional in 2013.

Horn and Goodall train out of Stretton boxing gym, under the watchful eye of Glenn Rushton.

Rushton says Goodall's history-making run, in which he was pipped by one point in the semi-final by the eventual champion, has him primed for glory on the Gold Coast next year.

"Even Jeff couldn't medal; it's a huge effort but not a surprise to me," Rushton said.

"He won silver in Glasgow and I really thought he could have won gold in Germany.

"I'll take him through to the Commonwealth Games now and he's got to start as favourite," Rushton said.
