Decathlete's sneak peak at Games Village
Sep 7, 2017 - 4:44 AM Australian decathlete Cedric Dubler has given the Commonwealth Games Village the thumbs up after a sneak peak on the Gold Coast this week. The Brisbane-based talent was the first Australian since 2000 to compete in an Olympic decathlon in Brazil last year.
While he said he enjoyed the experience, placing 14th overall, the logistics of Dubler's event meant his gear was strewn across balconies in the cramped Olympic accommodation.
The construction of Gold Coast's Commonwealth Games Village will be completed in October, but Dubler was given the chance to assess an on-site prototype during a visit this week.
It allowed him to begin visualising a journey to gold, but the 22-year-old was just happy to see that the rooms were big enough to fit all his gear.
"I have eight pairs of shoes for comp - a whole suitcase full of shoes - plus all the other gear, so I was using the balconies in Rio," he said.
"There's so much planning and so many minor details, physically and mentally, for my events, so little things like that become big positives."
The Australian Athletics Championships will be held on the Gold Coast in February, Dubler hoping to clinch that title and build from his performance at the recent World Championships in London.
"I'm working to improve my throws; my shot put, discus and javelin," he said.
"So plenty of strength work in the gym and naturally that will improve my jumps as well."
Dubler has ditched his day job this year as he hones in on April's Games.
And he has built a following through a video blog, which documents his athletic journey and gives an insight into the whirlwind nature of decathlon.
"I've had lots of young athletes come up to me and mention that they've been watching and were inspired by it," he said.
"I want to bring decathlon back up and be that representative that Australia can rely on to be competing at the biggest events.
"I think there's so much potential for more young athletes to succeed in decathlon if they're prepared to give it a go and not just focus on one or two events."
