Andrew McDonald Renegades' new coach
Aug 12, 2016 - 12:51 AM Andrew McDonald will take over as the Melbourne Renegades new coach for this summer's Big Bash League.McDonald assumes the role from David Saker, who has been appointed as Australia's new bowling coach.
He now has the arduous task of returning the Renegades to the finals for the first time in four seasons, and just the second time in the franchise's short history.
"The Big Bash League is extremely competitive and you do need some luck in this league but you create that as well," McDonald said.
"The smarter we play as a team and the more pressure we can put on our opposition, the more we'll find ourselves in winning positions."
The former Australian Test all-rounder is currently into the third year of his coaching career with English County side Leicestershire, and had also been linked to the vacant Victorian job.
However he has previously said his determination to rebuild his struggling county club meant any move that would require him in Australia for the full summer was at this stage unlikely.
"In an ideal world you want to put your stamp on a club, and that can take some time to do," he told AAP in July.
"Our seasons cross over - it's probably not going to happen."
McDonald captained the Renegades in the inaugural BBL in 2011-12, scoring two half centuries and averaging 32.80 with the bat.
He also played two seasons with the Adelaide Strikers, and another with the Sydney Thunder.
