Outspoken Maxwell's fresh ODI blow
Dec 4, 2016 - 8:28 AM Already fined and soundly castigated, Glenn Maxwell copped a fresh blow when left out of Australia's one-day side for the Chappell-Hadlee series opener in Sydney.Skipper Steve Smith had insisted Maxwell's public criticism of national wicketkeeper and Victorian teammate Matthew Wade three days ago would not affect his selection chances.
But Maxwell was omitted in favour of fellow allrounder Mitchell Marsh.
There was an awkward moment as Maxwell ran out the drinks to Wade during the keeper's rapid fire 38 off 22, which helped guide the Australians to 8-324 off their 50 overs.
Wade's swashbuckling style at times was reminiscent of the explosive Maxwell as he and Smith (164) set the tone against New Zealand on Sunday.
Last week Maxwell complained he found it "painful" being slotted to bat below wicketkeeper Wade, the Victorian skipper, in his state's line up during two recent Sheffield Shield matches.
He felt his demotion in the Bushrangers' order had affected his chances of being selected for the recent Adelaide Test.
His comments drew criticism from Smith and Australian team coach Darren Lehmann.
Lehmann also denied Maxwell had been in contention for the Test side, pointing out he hadn't made a Sheffield Shield century in two years.
A member of Australia's World Cup-winning side in 2015, Maxwell was dropped for the ODI tours of Sri Lanka and South Africa this year.
He had a middling interstate one-day competition, scoring 211 runs at an average of 30.11 with a high score of 67.
