Marsh unlucky but under pressure
Dec 4, 2016 - 5:55 AM Mitch Marsh's freakish dismissal has again brought his place in the Australian side under the spotlight.Allrounder Marsh was run out at the non-striker's end by Jimmy Neesham in unlucky circumstances in Australia's opening one-dayer against New Zealand at the SCG on Sunday.
Marsh was caught several metres outside his crease when skipper Steve Smith slapped Neesham back down the pitch and the medium-pacer got a finger to the ball, deflecting it onto the stumps.
While Marsh, who was out for just one, could hardly have got out in less fortuitous circumstances, he could be accused of lacking game awareness and at that stage of their innings there was no reason for him to be so far down the crease.
It left the Aussies reeling at 4-92 and he has now failed to make a half century in his last seven one-day innings.
He was dropped from the Australian Test team during the recent series loss to South Africa.
Australian coach Darren Lehmann has plenty of allrounder options heading into the second ODI in Canberra on Tuesday with James Faulkner and Glenn Maxwell also in the extended squad.
Maxwell was excluded from the final XI after his public criticism of Matthew Wade while James Faulkner is on the comeback trail from a knee injury.
Hilton Cartwright was also included in the initial squad however was released to turn out for Western Australia in their Sheffield Shield clash in Perth.
