Renshaw ready for first Test overseas
Feb 22, 2017 - 6:28 AM The sound advice of David Warner and Matthew Hayden is helping Matt Renshaw negotiate his maiden tour with Australia's Test cricket side.Travelling to India for the first time can be an eye-opening assault on the senses for anybody.
Try doing it while preparing to open the batting for Australia at age 20 in a Test that will capture national attention in the world's second most populous nation.
It would overwhelm many batsmen, but Renshaw isn't one of them.
"It's a lot different to hometown Brisbane," Renshaw said in Pune on the eve of the first Test, in which he is set to edge Usman Khawaja and claim the final spot in Australia's XI.
"I've just got to embrace it and try and get out and have a look and just explore. It's a completely different culture.
"I've just been trying to enjoy it.
"I'm 20 years old, I'm doing what I love for my country and it's something that really excites me ... I wasn't expecting to be here at this point in time."
Renshaw failed to fire in Australia's only tour game before the four-Test series starts in Pune on Thursday, but is expected to extend his opening partnership with Warner.
The openers have been paired in the nets since landing in Mumbai last week. Away from training they've been talking about the various threats posed by the world's top-ranked Test side on their own spin-friendly pitches.
"He's been really good," Renshaw said.
"Helping me and just discussing plans ... (Warner's advice was) when you've got a plan, try and stick to it.
"We've both been throwing back ideas to each other."
A pre-tour chat with Hayden has also shaped Renshaw's approach - especially to star spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.
"I had a bit of a chat with Haydos when I was back in Australia and he gave me a few good pointers," Renshaw said.
"He had great success with the sweep and I've been practising it.
"I'm not sure if it might come out in the game, but it's an option that I've got and I've worked hard on."
