Smith sees funny side of DRS controversy

Nov 22, 2017 - 3:50 AM These days Steve Smith can see the funny side of his Decision Review System (DRS) brain explosion.

And just as well.

The Barmy Army are set to give it to the Australian captain over this year's now infamous DRS gaffe in India in a new song to the tune of The Beatles' I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends.

Not that Smith will be losing any sleep over it.

The national skipper couldn't help but chuckle when the song's first few lines were recited to him ahead of the Ashes opener in Brisbane from Thursday.

It mocked Smith's self confessed "brain fade" when he appeared to look up at the Australian dressing room before trying to refer a decision to the DRS during the 2017 tour of India.

"That's brilliant," Smith said of the song.

"I am sure it will all be good fun out there.

"I have openly admitted that I made a mistake a little while ago in India and moved on from that.

"But obviously my past is coming back up in this series - all good fun."

The DRS is clearly no longer a touchy subject for Smith.

Besides having a giggle at the Barmy Army taunt, the Australian skipper revealed on Wednesday he was giving rookie opener Cameron Bancroft some last-minute tips on how to approach the review system before his Test debut against England.

"We were talking about DRS actually," Smith said.

"He's the kind of guy who is reluctant to use it if it is close.

"But I said 'don't worry about guys behind you, if you are not out you are not out - just go for it', it was mainly around that.

"But it was also 'you are ready to go, you are in form, you are a good young player and this is an exciting time for you, so give it your best'."
