England paceman Overton under injury cloud
Dec 15, 2017 - 11:17 AM England have their fingers crossed Craig Overton will be able to bowl on Saturday despite the paceman injuring his rib during the third Ashes Test against Australia at the WACA Ground.Overton suffered the injury attempting to take a spectacular one-handed catch off his own bowling early in Australia's innings on Friday.
The 23-year-old spilt the chance and the injury flared up during his second spell when he hunched over in pain after bowling the third ball of his 10th over.
Overton received medical treatment after that delivery and was able to complete his over before going off the field for more assessments.
An England spokesperson said it was unclear whether Overton would need scans.
If Overton is unable to bowl for the rest of the match, it would be a huge blow to England's victory hopes.
The match is delicately poised, with Australia 3-203 in reply to England's 403.
Overton was the pick of the bowlers on day two, snaring Australia openers David Warner and Cameron Bancroft during his first spell.
"He's a tough lad from Devon so I'm sure he'll be all right," England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow said of Overton.
"I think he just hurt his rib when he was diving for that spectacularly caught and bowled."
Overton finished the day with figures of 2-46 from 10 overs.
The right-arm paceman is playing his only second Test match after snaring figures of 3-105 and 1-11 during his debut in the recent day-night Test in Adelaide.
Australian batsman Usman Khawaja said Overton's 196cm height made him a tricky bowler to face.
