Poms query day-one DRS drama at WACA
Dec 17, 2017 - 7:02 AM England's brain trust approached match referee Richie Richardson after day one of the third Ashes Test to query a contentious call from third umpire Aleem Dar.Coach Trevor Bayliss and captain Joe Root both sought clarification from Richardson and registered concern about Aleem's process on Thursday, when the official gave Mark Stoneman his marching orders.
It's understood there was no formal written complaint from the tourists but the incident is likely to feature in Richardson's post-match report that he files for the International Cricket Council.
On-field umpire Marais Erasmus turned down Australia's caught-behind shout, only for Steve Smith to call for a review. Aleem was convinced there was conclusive evidence and overturned the on-field verdict.
Root struggled to hide his fury at the time, storming out of the changeroom and seemingly urging Stoneman to stay on the field in the hope the Decision Review System (DRS) verdict would be reversed.
Root also punched the changeroom door.
Stoneman hesitated for several seconds, wondering what to do, before eventually making his way off.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting was also critical of the DRS process.
"They're out on the balcony complaining about the decision ... but as it's turned out, it was the right call," Ponting told BT Sport.
"Stoneman's three-quarters of the way off, knowing probably in his own heart of hearts that he's got a glove on it.
"Then he's been told that he has to go back out because they can't see it.
"He thinks he's out and then suddenly he's back in. It's a horrible look for the game."
