Illinois amateur takes last spot at US Open

Jun 9, 2009 - 3:40 PM GRAYSLAKE, Ill.(AP) -- Kyle Peterman has won a playoff to earn the final spot available through qualifying for the U.S. Open next week.

The 156-man field will have 14 amateurs, the most for the U.S. Open this decade.

Peterman won the only spot available from the 36-hole sectional outside Chicago, which did not finish until Tuesday morning. The field now has 155 players. One spot has been set aside in case someone wins the St. Jude Classic for his second PGA Tour victory in the last year. Otherwise, the last spot will go to the first alternate.

The USGA has not decided who that alternate will be.

No one has shouted yet.
Be the first!
