Advocaat signs to become coach of Belgium

Jul 1, 2009 - 4:23 PM BRUSSELS(AP) -- The Belgian soccer federation says Dutch coach Dick Advocaat has signed a two-year contract to take charge of Belgium's national team next year.

Advocaat will remain with the Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg until his new job begins in January.

Advocaat will replace Rene Vandereycken, who was dismissed in April after losses in World Cup qualifiers left Belgium with little chance of making the tournament in South Africa next year.

Having guided the Netherlands to the 1994 World Cup quarterfinals and Euro 2004 semifinals, Advocaat's initial goal will be to qualify Belgium for the European Championship finals in 2012.
