Marathoner Mikitenko pulls out of worlds

Aug 8, 2009 - 7:33 PM FRANKFURT(AP) -- Leading marathoner Irina Mikitenko has pulled out of the upcoming World Championships because of her father's recent death.

German athletics federation sporting director Juergen Mallow said at a meet in Cottbus on Saturday that Mikitenko hasn't been able to focus on training since her father died two weeks ago.

The 36-year-old German has won the last two London marathons and has the fastest time this year of 2 hours, 22.11 minutes.

The worlds start next week in Berlin.
