River Plate beats LDQ 2-1 in Sudamericana

Nov 13, 2009 - 1:29 AM MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay(AP) -- Jorge Cordoba hit the winner as River Plate secured a 2-1 home leg victory over Ecuador's Liga de Quito in the Copa Sudamericana semifinals on Thursday.

River Plate had threatened to pull out of the semifinal against Liga in protest at having to play just two days before Uruguay's World Cup playoff against Costa Rica.

The clash in dates meant River captain and Uruguay international Jorge Rodriguez was unavailable for the match.

River got off to the ideal start when Richard Porta raced on to John Varela's throughball and stabbed it under Liga goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez in the eighth minute.

Edison Mendez equalized in the 34th. Claudio Graf dummied Neicer Reasco's cross from the right and Mendez finished with a scissor-kick from close range.

Varela was also the architect of River's second goal. The Colombian forward cut into the box from the right wing and pulled the ball pack for Cordoba to tap home on the hour.

In the other semifinal, Fluminense of Brazil beat Cerro Porteno 1-0 in Paraguay on Wednesday. The return legs are next week.
