Purtzer wins AT&T Classic on fourth playoff hole

Mar 19, 2007 - 2:17 AM VALENCIA, California (Ticker) -- Tom Purtzer kept Loren Roberts winless on the Champions Tour this season.

Purtzer made a birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole Sunday to defeat Roberts and win the $1.6 million AT&T Champions Classic.

Purtzer began the day three strokes behind second-round leader Hale Irwin but shot a final-round 4-under-par 68 to move to 10-under 206 after three trips over the Valencia Country Club. He bogeyed the par-4 17th hole but bounced back to birdie the par-5 18th, a sign of things to come.

Roberts was two shots off the pace when he teed off but worked his way into the playoff with a 3-under 67. He birdied the 15th and 16th holes to grab a share of the lead but parred his last two holes, also a sign of things to come.

The duo each parred the 18th hole three times before Purtzer finally got his birdie putt to fall on the fourth try.

It was Purtzer's fourth career Champions Tour win and first since the 2005 3M Championship. He won five times on the PGA Tour.

Roberts is having a difficult time breaking through. He finished no lower than sixth in his first five events before placing 15th at last week's Toshiba Classic.

A year ago, Roberts won his first three events and eventually finished second to Jay Haas for the money title and the Charles Schwab Cup.

David Eger shot a 69 and was alone in third at 9-under 207.

Irwin was among six players at 208. After an opening-round 64, he played just par golf on the weekend. closing with a 1-over 73.
