Weir falters, Chopra leads at Mercedes-Benz

Jan 7, 2008 - 1:09 AM KAPALUA, Hawaii (Ticker) -- Mike Weir has faltered while Daniel Chopra has surged into the lead Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Championship.

Weir entered the final round with a one-shot lead but played the front nine in 1-over-par and is three shots off the pace at the season-opening $5.5 million event.

The winner of the 2003 Masters, Weir started his round with a bogey and dropped another shot at No. 4. He carded his first birdie of the day at the par-5 ninth.

Chopra got off to a fast start with birdies at Nos. 2 and 3. He added two more on the front nine and at 15-under had a two-shot lead over a group of four players.

Steve Stricker, Stephen Ames, 2001 champion Jim Furyk and Nick Watney were tied for second at 13-under with most of the back nine to play.

First prize is $1.1 million.
