Presious Passion edges Banrock in Monmouth Stakes

Jun 13, 2009 - 10:42 PM OCEANPORT, N.J.(AP) -- Presious Passion beat two other horses in the stretch run to win the $200,000 Monmouth Stakes by a nose over Banrock at Monmouth Park on Saturday.

The 6-year-old gelding led most of the way before Proudinsky went past him as the field of eight headed for home. But Presious Passion regained the lead in the midstretch and held off the late-charging Banrock in the final strides.

Ridden by Elvis Trujillo - who had five winners on the day - and trained by Mary Hartmann, Presious Passion covered the 1 1-8 miles on a good turf course in 1:47 1-5 and paid $14.80, $6.80 and $3.40. Banrock returned $4.80 and $3.20, while Proudinsky was another length back in third and paid $2.60.

Trujillo also won the co-feature, the $70,000 Skip Away Stakes, riding Chirac to a 1\\-length victory over Gold Trippi.
