Top College Football Odds, Picks & Predictions: Week 1 Parlay (2022)

    NCAAF -

College football is finally back. Week 0 offered a good segue back into meaningful football, but Week 1 brings the games, excitement, and the card that truly show college football is back. Here’s a parlay worth taking a shot on in this weekend’s opening games.

    CFB FD CTA

    Utah (-3)

This is a perfect matchup for Utah. Utah brings a relentless rushing attack led by Tavion Thomas that ranked second nationally at 5.6 yards/rush last year to an opponent that struggled to defend the run last season (84th in rushing yards allowed, 87th yds/carry) and ranks 99th in returning defensive production. New HC Billy Napier and DC Patrick Toney will certainly look to bring new schemes and concepts to remedy this deficiency. Still, the relative weakness in the defensive front 7 will not hold up well against Utah’s rushing game and future NFL TEs Dalton Kincaid and Brant Kuithe.

The Florida offense and the still unproven Anthony Richardson won’t be able to keep pace, and the Florida defense will slowly tire out to the run and Utah’s time of possession.

    Appalachian St (+1)

UNC’s defense had some struggles against a seriously under-manned Florida A&M team. App St will pose a much greater challenge led by veteran QB Chase Brice, 1st team All-Sun Belt RB Nate Noel, and four returning starters on the offensive line (4.0% sack rate in 2021). I see App St scoring in bunches against what was a truly awful UNC defense last year (100th in scoring defense, 94th in 3rd down defense) that has shown little signs of improvement early.

While Drake Maye impressed last week, I expect him to have a much tougher go-around against App State. App State’s defense has consistently been among the better defenses in the country, and UNC’s offensive line was among the worst last year in sack rate (122nd). App State will be geared up to host in-state UNC, and the crowd may be just enough to tip the scales towards the home team.

    BYU (TT o34.5)

USF had one of the absolute worst defenses in the country last season. They allowed an average of 36 points and 480 yards per game, both among the bottom 15 in the country. They proved equally inept against defending the rush and the pass—allowing 5.9 yards/rush and a 68% completion percentage, ranked 122nd and 125th, respectively. This BYU squad should be able to choose their score with an offense with the best offensive line in the country, returns ample production, including a dynamic dual-threat QB in Jarren Hall, and addressed its hole at RB with Cal transfer Christopher Brooks.
