Marlins rough up Hoffman in 7th, beat Brewers

Jun 2, 2010 - 3:03 AM MIAMI(AP) -- Chris Coghlan was not having the start he envisioned after winning NL Rookie of the Year last season.

So he decided to change the song that plays when he comes to the plate.

Coghlan, who came into the game batting .227, hit a leadoff home run, then doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning Tuesday night as the Florida Marlins became the latest team to rough up Trevor Hoffman in a 6-4 win over Milwaukee.

"He's swinging the bat," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Even when he makes outs, they're hard. We're seeing the on-base percentage going up."

Coghlan changed his song to "Rebel Intro" by Lecrae, ditching "Song of the South" by Alabama.

"I'm not a superstitious guy, but I definitely got tired of hearing 'Song of the South,"' said Coghlan, who is hitting .364 (12-of-33) on the current homestand.

Hoffman, baseball's career saves leader, took over with the score 3-all. Coghlan led off with a double and scored on Jorge Cantu's double, and Ronny Paulino added a two-run single.

"I didn't throw a very good pitch to Paulino," Hoffman said. "He's an aggressive hitter and the ball stayed up."

Hoffman (1-4) allowed three runs in one inning, leaving the struggling closer with an 11.65 ERA.

"I've been on the other end of it for a while, too, so you have got to continue to try to be aggressive and the wind will turn," Hoffman said.

Coghlan hit a leadoff homer for the fourth time in his career. He also doubled twice as Florida won its third game in a row since Roy Halladay pitched a perfect game against them. Milwaukee lost its third straight.

"Anytime you can lead off the game with a home run, it doesn't happen often, definitely helps," Coghlan said. "I'm sure it gives the guys confidence."

Ricky Nolasco (5-4) went seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out eight.

Hoffman, who recently lost his job as the Brewers' closer, gave up Coghlan's ground-rule double. Gaby Sanchez sacrificed and Hanley Ramirez walked.

Cantu followed with a shallow fly ball near the right-field line that dropped in front of a diving Corey Hart. Paulino's single made it 6-3, with Cody Ross getting thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.

Clay Hensley relieved Nolasco in the eighth and allowed back-to-back walks with two outs and a bloop single by Alcides Escobar that made it 6-4.

Leo Nunez pitched a scoreless ninth to record his 11th save in 13 opportunities.

A day after beating the Brewers 13-5 and scoring all of their runs in the final three innings, the Marlins started quickly.

Florida hit for the team cycle in the first five batters - Coghlan homered, Sanchez tripled, Ramirez singled and Dan Uggla doubled on Dave Bush's 11th pitch for a 3-0 lead.

"I kind of got ambushed a little bit, not making particularly good pitches," Bush said.

Prince Fielder and Hart homered in the Milwaukee sixth. Hart hit his NL-leading 14th home run and Fielder hit his eighth.

NOTES: Brewers CF Jim Edmonds went 1 for 3 in his first game since May 15 after going on the disabled list with a left oblique strain. ... Cantu hit doubles in back-to-back at-bats, giving him a team-high 16 on the season. ... Bush battled through a blister on his middle finger, but expects to make his next start. ... Ramirez is hitting .400 (40-for-100) against the Brewers, the highest career average against any NL team.
