Wood does it with arm and bat as Reds down Astros

May 10, 2011 - 4:41 AM Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Travis Wood threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings and belted a three-run homer to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-1 victory over the Houston Astros in the first of a three-game series from Minute Maid Park.

Wood (2-3) allowed six hits and just one walk while striking out six.

Ramon Hernandez added a two-run home run for the Reds, who have won five of their last six.

Aneury Rodriguez (0-1), making just his second major league start, suffered the loss after allowing five runs and eight hits over five innings.

Hunter Pence hit his fifth homer of the season to account for the Astros' only run. They have lost three straight and five of six.

Wood broke a scoreless tie in the third with a deep shot to left. The blast was the second homer of the 24-year-old's career.

An inning later, Hernandez also lifted a ball over the left field fence, giving the Reds a 5-0 lead.

In the sixth, Cincinnati tacked on another, as Drew Stubbs brought home Chris Valaika with a two-out single.

Pence, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a triple in the first, hit a solo shot in the eighth, which grazed the glove of Jay Bruce as he extended over the fence in an effort to make the catch.
