Ramon Ramirez (2-0) turned in a scoreless seventh for the win, while Brian Wilson did the same in the ninth for his 18th save.
Scott Rolen and Edgar Renteria notched an RBI apiece for the Reds, who couldn't maintain the momentum from Saturday's 10-2 victory.
"We're not playing well or badly. We just expect more out of ourselves," Reds right fielder Jay Bruce said.
Jose Arredondo (0-2) was charged with two runs while retiring just one batter in the seventh inning.
Cincy starter Edinson Volquez held up his end of the bargain, allowing five hits and a pair of runs through six innings, but it all fell apart for the Reds in the home seventh, which began tied at 2-2.
Arredondo walked Chris Stewart, and after fanning Pat Burrell, gave up a double to Andres Torres. Miguel Tejada drew an intentional walk to load the bases, and Bill Bray came on.
Schierholtz lofted a fly to deep center to score the Giants' go-ahead run in Stewart then Huff stepped in and laced a single to left which brought in Torres for a 4-2 game.
Javier Lopez and Sergio Romo combined to hold the visitors off the board in the eighth, and Wilson worked around a two-out single from Ramon Hernandez to close out the victory.
"It's still early in the season, but every ballgame's important," Stewart said. "
A double from Rolen and sac fly from Renteria provided the Reds a 2-0 edge in the fourth.
That burst was all Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez gave up over his six-inning start, along with five hits, five walks and five strikeouts.
