Izturis keys late rally for Angels
Sep 8, 2011 - 5:03 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Maicer Izturis sparked a three-run eighth inning with a two-run double, and Jerome Williams tossed eight spectacular innings to help the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim beat the Seattle Mariners, 3-1, in the rubber match of a three-game series.Peter Bourjos added an RBI single in the eighth for the Angels, who moved 2 1/2 games back of the Rangers in the AL West. Texas lost to the Rays on Wednesday.
Williams (3-0) made just one mistake all night -- a homer to Trayvon Robinson in the sixth -- to pick up his third straight victory. The right-hander struck out five and walked one.
Charlie Furbush (3-8) allowed three runs on five hits over a career-high 7 1/3 innings for the Mariners, who have lost six of seven.
"Charlie threw a heck of a ball game," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "He was lights out all night long until the eighth."
Erick Aybar reached base on an infield single with one out in the eighth and pinch-hitter Alberto Callaspo walked. Izturis cleared the bases with a double to left-center field. Tom Wilhelmsen took over for Furbush and gave up an RBI single to Bourjos. Wilhelmsen's errant pickoff throw to first allowed Bourjos to reach third base. Howie Kendrick struck out swinging for the second out. Ichiro Suzuki made a nice catch at the wall on a ball hit by Torii Hunter to keep it a 3-1 game.
Jordan Walden tossed a perfect ninth for his 29th save of the season.
The Angels stranded a runner on second in the third inning. Izturis doubled to left with two outs, but Bourjos grounded out to end the inning.
After walking Mike Carp to start the second, Williams retired 12 straight batters. Robinson brought that streak to an end in the sixth with a blast to right.
"The home run was a changeup and he (Robinson) got it," Williams said.
Furbush retired 12 straight batters before giving up a two-out single to Mark Trumbo in the seventh. Vernon Wells flied out to end the threat.
