Beltran, Pelfrey lift Mets over Giants
May 5, 2011 - 10:43 PMVideo
Mike Pelfrey (2-3) earned the win, allowing two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and two walks while striking out five over 7 2/3 innings. Francisco Rodriguez picked up his seventh save of the season with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Mets, who got just their second win in seven games.
Jonathan Sanchez (2-2) took the loss, lasting five innings and giving up five runs on five hits and six walks while striking out six. The Giants have dropped three of their last five games.
"He's got to get it back here. He's better than this. We can't look at a guy that's going number two for us going four or five innings. It was not a good day for Johnny [Sanchez]," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy.
Rodriguez entered in the eighth with a man on first and two outs. While he was pitching to Mike Fontenot, Emmanuel Burriss was caught stealing second to end the inning.
Fontenot walked to lead off the ninth after an 11 pitch at-bat and Nate Schierholtz walked two batters later. Cody Ross then hit a single to left field that loaded the bases. But Miguel Tejada struck out and pinch-hitter Buster Posey grounded out to short to end the game.
Jason Bay led off the second with a double, moved to third on an Ike Davis single and scored when Ronny Paulino grounded into a double play. Scott Hairston and Mike Pelfrey then worked back-to-back walks before crossing the plate on Jose Reyes' triple to give the Mets a 3-0 lead.
Fontenot hit an upper-deck, solo home run in the fourth to put the Giants on the board.
Schierholtz led off the fifth with a grounder to Reyes, who threw the ball over the head of Davis at first base, which allowed Schierholtz to reach second. Sanchez then hit a two-out, RBI single to bring the Giants within one.
Beltran answered in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to give the Mets a 5-2 lead.
"It feels great. Every time you contribute to help the team win offensively or defensively it's a great feeling. Most importantly when you win," said Beltran.
Game Notes
