Pineiro wins No. 100, Angels edge Mets

Jun 18, 2011 - 3:19 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - It took more than a month, but Joel Pineiro finally picked up career win No. 100.

Peter Bourjos doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and made a spectacular catch against the fence in the bottom of the frame, helping the Angels hold on for a 4-3 win over the New York Mets.

Pineiro (3-3) threw 6 1/3 innings, and allowed six hits and two runs. The right-hander had been 0-3 over his previous six starts, but he moved to 4-0 lifetime in seven appearances against the Mets.

Jordan Walden walked two batters in the bottom of the ninth, but came back to strike out Carlos Beltran, Daniel Murphy and Angel Pagan in order to finish the game and pick up his 16th save of the year.

The Angels, who had 10 hits, are 3-1 on a current 12-game road trip.

"We definitely got some clutch hits tonight and that was good to see," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "It's been missing in a lot of our baseball so far this season."

Chris Capuano (5-7) gave up eight hits and three runs -- two earned -- over six innings. He had won his previous two starts.

"He didn't have his best stuff, it was quite obvious," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He got a lot of balls up, even his change-up wasn't that good."

Coming off a walk-off balk loss at Atlanta on Thursday, the Mets looked to erase the misfortune but couldn't rally against a team that has the best road interleague record all-time (71-54). New York went 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.

Consecutive two-out singles by Howie Kendrick and Mark Trumbo set up Bourjos' go-ahead hit, a short-hop smash double past Justin Turner down the left field line. Pineiro later fanned with the bases full to end the inning.

The Angels added an insurance run in the seventh when Torii Hunter battled reliever Bobby Parnell before punching a ground single to right field to drive in Maicer Izturis.

Ronny Paulino doubled in Jason Bay in the bottom of the eighth, but the Mets left pinch-runner Jason Pridie at third when pinch-hitter Scott Hairston struck out.

A throwing error on Turner led to the Angels' first run in the second, but Angel Pagan tied it with an RBI single in the bottom half.

Shortstop Jose Reyes couldn't handle a short-hop off the bat of Vernon Wells, allowing Izturis to score for a 2-1 margin in the third. But Pagan singled in Turner in the bottom of the inning.

Game Notes

The game was delayed by rain 33 minutes at the start...The Angels are 27-10 on the road in interleague play since 2007, which is also tops in MLB...Angels reliever Scott Downs, who gave up a run in the eighth, had gone 27 consecutive interleague appearances without yielding a run.
