Mets bring Halos down to earth

Jun 19, 2011 - 4:07 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Carlos Beltran went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI to back Mike Pelfrey's complete game, as the New York Mets handled the Angels, 6-1, in the second test of a three-game interleague series.

Justin Turner and Jason Bay both had an RBI and run scored for the Mets, who bounced back from a 4-3 loss in the opener of this set on Friday.

Pelfrey (4-5) gave up just one run on five hits to pick up his first complete game of the season. He also struck out five and did not issue a walk.

"It doesn't happen much these days as it did in the past, but it's fun to go out there and finish what you start," Pelfrey said.

Mark Trumbo hit a solo homer for the Angels, who have the best interleague road mark all-time (71-55).

Dan Haren (6-5) allowed six runs on seven hits over four-plus frames to suffer the loss.

"I never really got into a rhythm," Haren said.

The Mets got on the board in the third inning. Jose Reyes hit a one-out single, stole second, moved to third on Turner's groundout and crossed the plate on a Beltran base hit to center.

Pelfrey retired the first nine batters he faced in order, but Maicer Izturis led off the fourth with a single to center. After Erick Aybar grounded into a double play, Torii Hunter doubled down the left-field line, but Bobby Abreu flied out to end the frame.

New York tacked on two more runs in the home fourth to make it a 3-0 game. Angel Pagan reached base on an infield single, stole second and scored on Bay's base hit up the middle. Bay then stole second to get into scoring position for Lucas Duda, who hit a grounder to first. The ball went off the glove of Russell Branyan, which allowed Bay to score on the error.

The Mets then pulled away with a three-run fifth. Reyes walked, stole second and scored on Turner's single to right. Beltran then stepped to the plate and crushed Haren's offering over the wall in right-center field. The two-run homer landed on the Shea Bridge. Hisanori Takahashi came in from the bullpen and got the Angels out of the inning, but not before New York took a 6-0 lead.

Trumbo put LA on the board with a solo homer to right-center field in the sixth.

Game Notes

This is the Angels' first trip to Citi Field. They haven't visited the Mets since taking two of three at Shea Stadium from June 10-12, 2005. New York prevailed twice in a three-game series when the teams last met at Anaheim in 2008...Haren fell to 4-2 on the road this season...Pelfrey, who recorded his third career complete game, won for the first time since May 10 at Colorado.
