Bay, Pelfrey push Mets past Dodgers

Jul 6, 2011 - 5:50 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Jason Bay hit six home runs last season. He's already reached that total in 2011.

Bay hit a pair of homers, including an opposite-field three-run blast in the eighth inning, helping the New York Mets to a 6-0 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I'm not really the only guy out there, but sometimes you feel that way," Bay said. "The biggest thing was putting my head down and keep going. You struggle, and struggle, but when you have a night like this, you realize you're the same guy you've always been."

Mike Pelfrey threw six shutout innings and Carlos Beltran also went deep for the Mets, who won their third straight game. Pelfrey (5-7) scattered five hits and left after throwing 102 pitches, 60 for strikes to post just his second road win in nine such decisions this season.

"I didn't think I had the greatest stuff, but it was better than it had been, so it's a step in the right direction," Pelfrey said.

Ted Lilly (5-9) yielded six hits and three runs over six innings to suffer his fourth straight loss.

"The home runs have hurt Teddy for sure," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "They kind of hurt us all night."

The Dodgers, who went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base, lost their fourth consecutive game.

Los Angeles couldn't score with a runner at third in the second and third innings and Lilly grounded out to first to leave the bases full in the fourth. During that inning, Matt Kemp was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Juan Uribe's double.

Angel Pagan singled with one out in the fifth and made it to third before Beltran turned on a first pitch from Lilly and hammered his 13th homer of the year, a shot to center field.

LA failed again with the bases packed in the bottom of the fifth when Juan Uribe lined out to Pagan in center.

Bay led off the sixth with his first homer of the night, to left-center, and a 3-0 cushion.

Hong-Chih Kuo gave up a single to Beltran to start the eighth. Blake Hawksworth then allowed a single to Ronny Paulino, and Bay followed with a round-tripper to right. He has six homers in 60 games this year. He had the same number over 95 contests in 2010.

Jason Isringhausen escaped a jam with two men on in the bottom of the eighth and D.J. Carrasco pitched the ninth to close New York's sixth shutout of the year.

Game Notes

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, who leads the majors with a .354 batting average, sat out his third straight game due to a strained left hamstring...This was the 16th career multi-homer game for Bay, who has hit safely in eight straight contests. He has at least one RBI in four consecutive games and in seven of his last nine...The Mets are 4-1 this season against the Dodgers...Beltran has a 10-game hitting streak.
