Guthrie outduels Price, Orioles beat Rays

Apr 2, 2011 - 2:09 AM St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Jeremy Guthrie dazzled in eight scoreless innings to help Baltimore top Tampa Bay, 4-1, in the teams' season opener.

Guthrie (1-0) allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out six. At one point he retired 13 consecutive batters in the outing, just his third Opening Day start.

Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis each had a hit and two RBI for the Orioles, who lost 96 games in 2010, their 13th straight losing season.

Last season's AL Cy Young runner-up, David Price (0-1), was tagged with the loss. He threw seven innings, during which he surrendered four runs on five hits and a walk, and struck out seven.

The Rays, who lost outfielder Carl Crawford, first baseman Carlos Pena and starting pitcher Matt Garza during the offseason, brought in veterans Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez to add some experience to the club. Both went 0-for-4 in Friday's loss, while Ben Zobrist hit a ninth-inning home run.

J.J. Hardy reached third base after a double and a throwing error on Price's pickoff attempt during the top of the third. Two batters later, Markakis singled home Hardy for the first score of the game.

Baltimore added onto its lead in the fifth, starting with a Matt Wieter's single and a Hardy walk. Roberts then hit a triple that rolled deep in the left field gap to score both runs. He trotted to the plate on Markakis' sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Guthrie was cruising through six innings with six strikeouts and surrendering just one hits. During the stretch, he retired 13 straight batters starting in the second and ending in the sixth on Zobrist's single.

Guthrie bailed himself out in the eighth, picking off B.J. Upton to squash a possible threat with two runners on with one out. Jim Johnson came in the ninth and served a home run to Zobrist on his first pitch, however, he settled down to end any chance for a Rays' comeback.
