Royals get by Orioles in 10th

May 4, 2011 - 4:54 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Jeff Francoeur's sacrifice fly drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Kansas City Royals topped the Baltimore Orioles, 6-5, to open a three-game set.

Francoeur also had a solo home run while Wilson Betemit and Melky Cabrera each had a pair of hits for the Royals, who have won four straight. Tim Collins (2-1) got the win throwing the last out in the top of the 10th.

Adam Jones went 3-for-4 and Luke Scott belted a three-run homer for Baltimore, which has dropped two straight on the heels of a three-game win streak.

Jason Berken (0-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up Francoeur's game- winning run.

Despite getting out of the ninth and holding the winning run at third, Berken wasn't as lucky in the 10th.

The righty led off the inning with a walk to Alex Gordon, who got to third on Billy Butler's single up the middle. That set up Francoeur's high fly ball to right field that gave Gordon enough time to scurry home for the win.

"When it got to 2-0, I was looking for that slider away to be honest with you, something I could just hit out there to right field," said Francoeur. "You've got a guy on third like Alex who's fast -- I wouldn't say very fast, but fast -- you knew he could score."

"At this point, I've just got to sit here and try to get better, not overanalyze it," said Berken. "Just find ways to execute better and that's what I'll do. I'll be ready for my next outing."

Kansas City posted a three-spot in the second inning, starting with Betemit and Mike Aviles clubbing back-to-back RBI doubles. Betemit then crossed home on Brayan Pena's sac fly to center field.

It took just one swing of the bat in fourth for the Orioles to knot the game up when Scott drilled a three-run homer over the right fence.

Cabrera's RBI double in fifth gave the Royals a 4-3 lead, but the Orioles charged right back in the sixth with two runs.

Jones' line drive to right scored Vladimir Guerrero and Matt Weiters brought home Mark Reynolds later in the inning for Baltimore's first and only lead of the game.

But the lead was short lived as Francoeur planted a solo shot in the left seats to tie the game up, 5-5.

Game Notes

He was available to play, but did not see action...Kansas City starting pitcher Jeff Francis lasted 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits...Orioles starter Brad Bergesen allowed four runs -- three earned -- in the five-inning no decision.
