Westbrook, Cardinals shut out Royals
May 22, 2011 - 12:20 AMVideo
Westbrook (4-3) allowed four hits and three walks while fanning three, and Fernando Salas tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his sixth save.
Ryan Theriot knocked in the other run for the Cardinals, who rebounded from a 3-0 loss in Friday's series opener.
"What good is frustration going to do? We're doing the best we can," Holliday said of his club's 16 consecutive scoreless innings before Saturday's late surge. "Sometimes it doesn't work out. They run some good pitching out there. It's not going to do any good to get frustrated."
Tim Collins (2-2) took the loss, charged with the go-ahead run for the Royals, who saw their two-game win streak ended.
Nathan Adcock's first major-league start lasted five scoreless frames, where he limited St. Louis to three hits and fanned four.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the eighth, as Albert Pujols singled with one out and, after Collins was replaced by Blake Wood, Holliday cleared the wall in left-center for a 2-0 game.
"I was trying to go sinker down and in," Wood said. "I figured if I put it where I was supposed to, we'd get a chance to get a double play. That's what I was trying to do. I left it out over the plate."
Daniel Descalso reached on a fielder's choice in the ninth and later scored when Theriot lofted a sacrifice fly to center to give the visitors a three-run edge.
Salas fanned Alex Gordon, induced a groundout from Melky Cabrera, then after Eric Hosmer singled, Jeff Francoeur grounded back to Salas to end the game.
The early duel between Westbrook and Adcock featured some close calls.
The Cards left men on the corners in the first, and stranded a runner on third in the second. St. Louis also failed to score with two on in the third.
The Royals left two runners in scoring position in the fourth and Gordon was picked off second in the sixth.
Collins worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh by getting Theriot to fly out.
